Transversal Axis
The Ethics and Medical Humanities axis has the general objectives of promoting the study and dissemination of scientific knowledge, conducting research, providing training and/or collaborating in training within the field of bioethics, and establishing the national and international contacts deemed necessary for these purposes.
In pursuing its objectives, the Center for Bioethics:
. Promotes an attitude of inquiry and the pursuit of knowledge in bioethics through scientific and intellectual interdisciplinary exchange among professionals, researchers, reflection groups, as well as national and international associations and societies with identical goals;
. Cultivates competence, honesty, and scientific rigor, with the broadest openness to different schools of thought, models, methodologies, and praxis;
. Contributes to continuous and updated training, with an emphasis on healthcare professionals.
UNITS
The Center for Bioethics also includes the Palliative
Care Unit and the Academic Unit for Studies and
Intervention on Grief.
1. Palliative
Care Unit
The Palliative Care Unit of the Center for Bioethics was created with the objective of:
_ Serving as a dynamic hub for teaching and research in palliative care at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) and in Portugal;
_ Fostering synergies and partnerships with organizations that also aim to promote quality palliative care;
_ Collaborating with responsible entities to define quality standards for education, at its various levels, in this area of medicine and health sciences.
Main activities of the Palliative Care Unit include:
_ Promoting and participating in undergraduate teaching activities in the field of pain and palliative care;
_ Organizing regular (annual) postgraduate refresher courses in palliative care;
_ Supervising, supporting, and participating in teaching activities (undergraduate and postgraduate) promoted by other entities.

2. Academic Unit for Studies
and Intervention on Grief
The Academic Unit for Studies and Intervention on Grief was created with the objectives of:
_ Serving as a dynamic hub for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in this field at FMUL;
_ Providing specific bibliographical support;
_ Stimulating scientific research in this area and hosting national and international projects;
_ Fostering synergies and partnerships with other public and private institutions, IPSS (Private Institutions of Social Solidarity), and scientific societies related to this field;
_ Assisting in collective intervention actions in the event of disaster situations;
_ Disseminating topics related to this area both within and outside FMUL, namely through seminars, workshops, and national and international conferences.

Scientific Activity
The scientific activity of the Center for Bioethics is developed around three fundamental lines of research:
1. Research ethics
2. Relational ethics
3. End-of-life decision-making ethics
Its results have been disseminated in national and international scientific journals, at national and international scientific conferences, and through the publication of books and book chapters within one of the Center's editorial lines.
